As we grow older our skin becomes creased in some areas by the repeated use of our facial muscles. Over time, these creases and deep expression lines become permanent giving the impression of ageing. This is not only the result of the repeated use of the facial muscles, but also the loss of collagen and elastin production in these areas.
Anti wrinkle injections using Botulinum Toxin (commonly referred to as BOTOX®) are one of the best-known and popular anti-ageing treatments as they produce very effective results in just over a week. The Botulinum injection is a safe procedure that can significantly reduce the ability of the facial muscle to flex and move and by doing this, the skin stops being creased and is allowed to recover, causing the lines to soften or even fade away.
The areas that are normally most affected are the horizontal forehead lines (Area 1), the frown or glabella lines (Area 2) and the crow’s feet around the eyes (Area 3). These are the areas that normally cause that ageing and tired looking skin.
Results can last from four to six months or even longer.
The glabella and crows feet can be treated in isolation, at the cost of a single area. However, for best and most predictable results, the forehead requires the glabella to be treated as well which means that treating the forehead is at the fee schedule of a two area treatment.
Other areas of the head and neck can be treated effectively with Botulinum Toxin.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a toxin that blocks the chemical signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract. When it’s used in the muscles of the forehead, around the eyes or the lips it causes them to temporarily relax making wrinkles less noticeable. The treatments is completely safe and has proven to be one of the most successful and effective cosmetic treatments to get rid of wrinkles and deep expression lines.
What will I experience?
The treatment involves a number of small injections using a very fine needle to inject a small amount of toxin into the muscle groups that cause the wrinkling. These injections are virtually painless. Immediately after the injections there may be some very mild tickling or swelling which usually subsides within a few hours. The treatment takes approx 20 min. No local anaesthetic is required and you can resume normal activities immediately. You will then be given tailored after-care advice, and if you wish you are welcome to attend for a review of your treatment in 4 weeks with Dr Silvester. During your appointment, Dr Silvester will assess your facial lines, discuss your expectations of the treatment and answer any questions you may have. Please attend without make up or remove this when you arrive at the clinic.
When can I expect to see results?
Most patients notice that their lines and wrinkles are much less visible or have even disappeared within a few days. You will have a fresher, rested, and more youthful appearance. You should notice a difference within two to four weeks.
Is the treatment permanent? How often do I need them?
The anti-wrinkle effect of the treatment can last four to six months, but to maintain the effect of the treatment you would need follow-up injections when the effect of the previous injection has worn off. We are more than happy to offer further treatments after this time. I am more than happy to offer further treatments after this time. I avoid injecting too soon as your body may be less sensitive to the injections if repeated too quickly. I am happy to advise you of when is the most clinically appropriate time to have further treatments.
